Backpack Ministry

Blessing Fifty backpacks in 2018

Each summer, we collect backpacks and school supplies for students at Mary Feeser Elementary School. The bags are blessed and given to the students in conjunction with back-to-school night in August of each year.

St. David’s has a long history with MFES. When the parish was started as a Mission of St John’s in 1964, the charter members of the new congregation met each week in the gymnasium of the Elementary School while a more permanent worship space was being constructed across the street.

In 2018, we expanded our ministry while focusing on its purpose. We collected supplies and bags over the course of the summer, which were then filled by grade (Kindergarten (25) / 1st Grade(25)). The Sunday prior, fifty bags were presented at the altar and prayed over by the congregation with a special priestly blessing. On the night of Mary Feeser E.S. Ice Cream Social, when students could see their classroom and meet their teacher, St. David’s hosted a backpack give-a-way and hotdog dinner.

Any bags not handed out the night of the event were taken to the office at the school. Through out the course of the year, transferring students are greeted with a new bag and all the supplies they will need for free.

Our relationship with the school across the street continues to grow. We pray each day for the Faculty, Staff, Students and their Families. And we look forward to the new ways the Spirit of God will direct us to work together.
